Electron 60
After some frustrating weeks with the wind coming from the wrong direction, finally an onshore breeze struck the coast and we were in the air. To my delight, the Electron 60 flew perfectly from launch (other than some minor trimming) and it rushed into the distance in the 12 knot wind. The first thing that was noticeable was the incredible penetration it has. After gaining some confidence with it, I was flying 100m in from BEHIND the lift zone and it just kept on coming! And this was without ballast! If I hadnt of known, I would have sworn that it was fully loaded up.
Also noticeable was the increased wingspan. Although only increased from 54", the additonal wingspan makes it feel much bigger, and you need to give it a bit more room. The rollrate however, is still quite lively and more than you will ever need. In fact, the all round responsiveness of the Electron 60 is excellent, including elevator, and banging turns is not a problem. Inverted flight is not fantastic in light lift, but in medium to heavy lift, is capable of most inverted manouvers with ease.
DSing the Electron 60 was no less than awesome! Carving up circuits were a walk in the park for this slippery little customer. The reduced drag due to the thinner section (in fact 4mm thinner than the 54") was more than evident by the quietness of it passing through the separation layer. It just sliced through the air and retained its energy brilliantly. Large, open circuits, deep into the DS zone were easy as it just seemed to hold its speed with amazing stability.
There is no doubt that the Electron 60 has surpassed its predecessor, the 54, and taken its performance to the next level. Its faster, more stable, yet still bangs a turn beautifully! Another great Slope/DS plane from Norm at Tuffplanes.
